Creative Critical Reflection Draft 4

Integrated Technology-

  • Website- For my magazine I would have a website so everyone can see the most recent updates and will be able to see the magazines if they are subscribed. This is also where all the giveaways will be placed. The website is more for the older audience plus it usually has less glitches than an app.

  • App- My magazine will also have an app so that it is more accessible. It will have all the same information as the website just more condensed. The app will be free to download, and you will receive minimal access. You will only really be able to see the titles and a summary of the main articles and you will be able to see what the giveaways, but you will not be able to enter them.

  • Both- This is were most of my distribution will come from because they will pay for the subscription and receive access to all the magazine through the app and website.  There will be ads on both, I will have pop-up ones and banners.

Production skills that developed-

  • Publisher- I got very good at using publisher throughout the project. I learned how to frame the page to where the information does not look cluttered. I also tested an array of fronts to establish a professional magazine, now knowing what looks good and what does not look good. Using publisher also taught me how the make the picture frame the page well around the text, making sure everything can be seen.

  • Editing photos through Photoshop- I had never used Photoshop before so through this project I learned how to use the different setting of it, like the fillers and how to change the saturation and lighting of a picture. I also learned how to fade a photo which was my favorite part; I faded the picture on the cover at the edges.

  • Photo Shoots- Overall I had never done a photo shoot before, or had been in one. So it was difficult planning out where it would happen, what pose to do, and who I would take photos of. The most difficult part was doing the posing because I was terrible at coming up with poses, but by working with the person I was taking photos of we came up with some different poses, and now I will be more prepared for the next time I have to do a photo shoot. The easiest part was finding a place to do it and who I would take photos of. I dance at a dance company so I took the photos there, and I just got my friends to be the models. But next time I definitely need to find a place with better lighting and use a different camera, so that was something I learned for production.

Creative Critical Reflection Draft 2

Engage with audiences- My magazine engages with a dancer audience by showing relevant info that will inform people what is new in dance in the Sarasota County area. I use local studios like Mystical's Dance Company so people can understand the information in the magazine. I also use things like giveaways so the readers will continue reading the magazine. The next way I engage with the audience is by using local shows/performances so that people get the most recent information and the shows are accessible because it is in the Sarasota County area and the audience are people in the area.

How it will be distributed- My magazine will be using an app as the main source of distribution. The app would cost money and this pays for the current magazine that is available, but from there on they have an option of separately buying the magazines of paying for the whole year. So most of the magazines will be available online, but I will be doing some traditional distribution by putting my magazine in the dance studios that let me and info center that are located all around Sarasota. From there people and buy a monthly subscription and it will be mailed to them.

Creative Critical Reflection Draft 1

My blog utilizes traditional convention while also challenging a couple conventions.

Cover- Has the traditional style of the title at the top of the page,  but still making it somewhat unique by having the first letter of each word larger than the rest of the word. I framed the picture with the article titles to make the picture stand out, which most magazines use. I also utilize the idea of having one main photo that takes up the whole page on my cover. One more thing that is on my magazine that all the other magazines I researched had was the website above the title.

Table of Contents- The conventions that I utilized is having the picture on one side with the pages on the other side, to make it easy to read and pleasant to the eye. Like other magazines I did not put all my article titles on my table of contents, because it would make the page look too cluttered, and I just want to point out the main articles that I want to showcase. I challenged the traditional conventions by having the title of my magazine one the table of contents instead of the word table of contents. I got this idea from the Dramatics magazine I researched, but most of them had the words table of contents on them. Another convention I utilized is having a picture that is similar to the cover photo on the table of contents page. It was the same girl in the photo, but she is doing a different extension and I added the teacher helping her with the move.

Article- I have a very traditional article page, having the article title at the top of the page bigger than the rest of the article to emphasis it. One thing I did that was not a traditional convention was tat I have the page number on the top of the page instead of the bottom. I did this because I thought it would look better and unique. I also use the convention of embedding the pictures into the article having the paragraph next to it talking about the picture. In the dance magazines I researched most of them used the convention of putting quotes in the article instead of having them stand out separated from the article, so that what I did. I feel this gives a cleaner look and makes the reader fully read the article.

Represents social groups and issues- My magazine represents the dance community in the Sarasota County area. There are over 40 dance studios in Sarasota County, plus there are many place that show dance performances that are not from studios locally. This magazine helps people keep up with new things happening with dance especially locally, but also nationally.

Table of Contents Revision

For my revisions I wanted to make the article titles bigger to take up more of the black space, and I also make the picture bigger to fit the page better. To show it is the main article I also made the main article title bold to feature it. I changed the font to make it more readable and to correlate with the rest of the writing. I also made the writing under the title bigger because people said they had a hard time reading it.

Cover Revision

For my revision I have changed the font so all the text is in unison. I also made the title of the magazine first letter of each word a few sizes bigger to make the title stand out. For the article titles I make a few of them bigger and spaced them out to give a more organized feel. I added the website for my magazine, because all the magazines I researched had them and I feel it gives a more professional feel.

Distribution Plan

My magazine will be using an app as the main source of distribution. The app would be cost money and this pays for the current magazine that is available, but from there on they have an option of separately buying the magazines of paying for the whole year.

I would only do the other way of distributing if I became a popular magazine then people would be able to buy whatever issue they want and it will get sent to them.

Digital Distribution 2

Dance Magazine also digitally distributes by an app. This app lets you read article and is a place where you can buy the magazine. The app lets people read the magazine out and about. This also helps the environment, because the company does not have to use paper to deliver the magazine to people.
I like this option because everyone uses apps now a days and it helps the environment at the same time.

Digital Distribution 1

With the magazine "Dance Magazine", they distribute the product off the website allowing anyone to go on and buy any issue they want. A good thing about this type of distribution is that people can buy old issues that they might have over looked.
I personally would not want to do this method, because you would have to print old issues which costs a lot of money.

Traditional Distribution Research

Traditional distribution of magazines includes newspaper stands and stores. They used to mainly be sold at newspaper stands because they were everywhere. Also back then they did not have any ways of electronically distributing the magazines.
With my magazine I would only distribute it in the Sarasota area, because it is only about Sarasota County.

Marketing Plan

Option 1- The main option is to put the main studios in Sarasota on the cover, so that they will post about it and so that they might buy it and put it in there studios. I would use the dance studio I already go to and then I can branch out from there. I know for sure that I could put my magazine at the studio that I currently dance at.

Option 2- The next option is that I could do giveaways. There are a lot of dance shows in Sarasota and to attract people to my magazine I can offer free tickets to local shows as a giveaway, but you would have to be subscribed to the magazine to enter.

Option 3- The last option is to make an Instagram for the magazine. This will let me show Sarasota what my magazine is about and widens my audience. This will let me connect with the studios in the area.

I think the best option is to do option 2, because in everyone loves free things and I can work with the local shows to possibly get reduced prices on the tickets, because it helps them with advertising. I would put this ad in the magazines and on the website for the magazine.

Marketing of Pointe Magazine

One major way Ponite Magazine markets is by giveaways. Another magazine I researched also did giveaways, but these are bigger ticket items; such as a pair of tickets to BalletX's spring series program, and a pair of tickets to Tulsa Ballet's "Tchaikovsky: The man Behind the Music". They also have some smaller giveaways like a DVD of the Disney's "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms".

Another way this magazine markets their magazine is by the people on their cover. The person on the October 2018 cover is Hannah Bettes, a former competition star who is now doing amazing things in the dance community. She posted on Instagram about her being on the cover; she has about 11.7 thousand followers on Instagram.

Marketing of Dance Spirit

One of the main way Dance Spirit markets their magazine is by having people of high standing on its cover. On the October 2016 issue they had a big influencer on the cover (Briar Nolet). Briar is famous for getting 1st place at Nationals and is on the TV show The Next Step which is very big in Canada. She posted on Instagram about her being on the cover; In which she has about 392.2 thousand followers, giving the magazine major coverage.

Another way they advertise is by doing a lot of giveaways through the magazine. Right now they are giving away a dance bag, stretch band, and a key chain. All of these bring people into the magazine because they would want to be informed about future giveaways.

On the website magazines.com  you can subscribe to the magazine for a discounted price. This is most likely having to do with them having a partnership in which they are able to sell it at that price while still getting a commission.

Marketing of Dance Informa

The main way that dance Informa does its marketing is through the Joffrey Ballet School( The most famous Ballet school in the world). On the Joffrey Ballet school home page they have a link tab that leads you to the home page of Dance Informa.

This gets the magazine major exposure to the whole dance community; especially people with lots of money because This ballet school is also the most expensive dance school in the world. They even did a give away with the school. They did a summer scholarship contest bring in people that might not have as much money.

Another big way they market is by having an American edition and an Austria edition to cater to both places, because very different things are happening in the dance community in those places.

Feedback/Revisions

There was a lot of feedback given to me; some of the good feedback was that the layout was good and that my cover was cool. Some of the constructive feedback I received was that my pictures were a bit blurry and to make my text bigger. I agree with most of the feedback, especially about the photos, because I'm not a great photographer.
To revise my magazine I will make the text bigger in my article to get rid of some of the white space. I will also retake some of my photos with a better camera, so that they aren't as blurry.

Uses of Conventions

I wanted to make my table of contents different than most of the table of contents I had seen; so I mixed two of the magazines I researched to create a unique table of contents that is simple yet effective. MY magazine effectively represents dancers in Sarasota and all the events that are happening related to the subject of dance in Sarasota.

Mid Term Submission

Title Page- For my title page I used the picture that I did because it was the cleanest photo I had and it also fit the entire page well while still having plenty of room for the article names and the title of the magazine. I made my font white to contrast the background and to make the words standout. I put the article titles evenly around the picture making sure to not leave much empty space. The main article of the magazine is in the biggest font compared to the other article to convey to the readers what the main article is.
Table of Contents- The table of contents page is grey instead of white to help the picture blend well with the page. When I tried making the page white it made the edge of the picture look to sharp and misplaced. I did not want the page to look cluttered so I only put the articles that were the most relevant or were the longest. I wanted to put the title of the magazine on my table of contents instead of the words table of contents because I saw it in one of the magazines I researched and I thought it looked clean and unique. The font is also used by a big dance wear company called Russian Pointe, I wanted to use this font to give a dance environment feel.
Article- In my article I wrote about the number one rated dance after school program in Sarasota. Mystical Dance Company has been voted the number one after school dance program in Sarasota for two years in a row, so because I dance at the studio I thought I would write about the studio. I used recent events that are going on at the studio as my main points like how they are moving building and what the studio did for the holidays. I interviewed some students from the studio and some parents; I also got to interview the director of the studio because I am friends with her. I too the pictures in between classes as to not disrupt my classes, I even got one of my teachers to be in a picture.

Interview Questions

I will interview some kids at the dance studio and all the the director of the studio. I'm just going to ask the kids how they like the studio? and what is there favorite part of the studio? I will then ask the director how the move is going? and what they do to celebrate the holidays? These questions will allow for the readers to understand the atmosphere of the studio and the priories for them.

Table of Contents

On my table of contents I did not want the word table of contents. In one of the magazines I researched the table of contents just had the name of the article which I liked. I also wanted to make it clear and simple with the articles I thought were the most relevant and important. I just wanted to just use one photo to not clutter the page. I also made the page grey instead of white to make the photo mesh more. When I had the page as white the photo looked to sharp almost fake and I wanted it the blend better, and the grey page allows that. I used the font I did for the title because it is the same font as a big pointe shoe brand called Russian Pointe.

Final Photo Choices

These are my final choices for the photographs going in my magazine. I edited them with Photoshop. These were the clearest photos that I took, I'm not the best photographer so it was a little hard the get them to be clear.

Photo Shoots

I did the photo shoots at my dance studio, because that is the location the article is written about. The people that I took photos of are dancers and teachers at the studio to keep the article authentic. I took photos in between classes to make sure not to disturb anyone. The photo where the girl is jumping was a struggle because I'm not a photographer, so what I did was I took a video of her doing the leap and then I took an image from the video and it turned out better than the ones that I took while she was jumping.
